time is running out

Known to most as a traffic hub, but Frederikshavn has a lot more to offer. An unusually high number of shops and restaurants, and even the only palm beach in Denmark!

Frederikshavn has its own very special atmosphere thanks to its maritime history, idyllic setting, and the ferries plying back and forth to Sweden, Norway and Læsø. The vast number of visitors to the town (around five million a year) have nurtured a shopping mecca, including one of the country’s longest pedestrian streets. Nature also plays a role, with a wealth of activities and things to do on land and sea.

World’s most northerly palm beach

It all started in 2004 with 30 palm trees. There are now 100 in the white sand of Denmark’s most exotic beach. On a summer’s day, when the sun beams down from a cloudless sky, you could almost think you were in the Caribbean. But this is the Kattegat and Denmark at their very best.

Frederikshavn presents a delightful prospect of fun for the entire family, boasting an extraordinary vantage point from the unique platform at Pikkerbakken’s southern end. From here, visitors can enjoy a spectacular view over Frederikshavn and the Kattegat Sea. The locality is rich in attractions including the Coastal Museum, Bunker Museum, military installations, as well as a deer park and botanical gardens. As one approaches the Port of Frederikshavn, one of Denmark’s busiest commercial harbors, the historic Krudttårnet (Gunpowder Tower) greets them, serving as a nod to the era when Frederikshavn was known as Fladstrand. This historical monument also highlights the town’s annual celebration of its rich history through the vibrant and colorful Tordenskjold Days.

Frederikshavn: A Gateway to Denmark's Northern Jewels

Just a mere 12 kilometers from Frederikshavn lies the charming town of Sæby, and about 40 kilometers away, Denmark’s northernmost town, Skagen, can be found. Both Sæby and Skagen are true gems, offering stunning beaches, breathtaking natural scenery, and the quintessential Danish coziness.

A short 7 km journey north of Frederikshavn brings you to the quaint fishing port of Strandby, epitomizing North Jutland’s idyllic charm. The harbor is a bustling hub of activity, thanks to the local fishing boats, and is flanked by a fleet of yachts and pleasure boats in the summertime. Strandby boasts its own beach hotel and local eateries, alongside a fish auction that welcomes public participation.

Visit Lovely Skagen

Skagen, Denmark's northernmost town, is imbued with the charm of seaside hotels. Here, iconic yellow houses meet art from the Skagen painters and vast culinary experiences – both local and international. It inspires the desire to linger just to experience the sea's roar, the cozy streets, and the restaurant menus once again. Skagen is truly something special.

At the tip of the European continent, an artists’ collective in the late 19th century was captivated by the unique light and let it shine on everyone in the small fishing community. This gave the town an international reputation and a special place in art history. The art was, and still is, exceptional and remains a significant part of life in Skagen.

The same is true for the yellow Skagen houses, gourmet restaurants, and seaside hotels; not to forget the unique nature. With Grenen, where the Skagerrak and Kattegat seas meet. Truly genuine and unique.
